BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – The Birmingham Police Department says they have taken a man into custody for the kidnapping and abuse of his elderly parent.
On Tuesday, officers from the East Precinct made a welfare check on Jones' residence after reports were made that the resident had not been seen for over a month and a foul odor was emanating from the building. After making verbal contact with Jones, the officers found Jones to be uncooperative and obtained to search warrant in order to check on the victim.
The Birmingham Police Crime Reduction Team and U.S. Marshals entered the home and found the victim lying in a bedroom. The victim appeared malnourished and in need of medical treatment. Officers also report garbage and various insects throughout the home.
Jones will receive treatment for a mental condition before being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
The victim has been placed in the care of family members.
