Etowah County conducts massive drug roundup

ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Authorities are expected on Wednesday to release more info about a series of raids and roundups based on drug charges in Etowah County.

Sheriff's deputies, Gadsden police officers and federal agents arrested dozens of suspect in what they are calling "Operation Recon", ridding Etowah County of narcotics.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin says these raids bring in 300 to 400 drug suspects a year, not counting those arrested on a daily basis.

"If we didn't do this, just imagine the number of people who'd be on the streets of Etowah County selling drugs," said Sheriff Todd Entrekin. "We do these, like I said, at least every three to four months.  And each time, they get bigger."

As of Tuesday afternoon, officers and drug agents had arrested about half of the 154 suspects.

The Etowah County sheriff's office plans to hold a news conference at one on Wednesday to release more information on Operation Recon.
