Texting while driving ban begins in Vestavia Hills

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL (WBRC) - No playing with your cell phone in Vestavia Hills. The city's new ban on texting while driving takes effect Wednesday.

In addition to texting behind the wheel, the Vestavia Hills ordinance also covers web browsing, typing on a laptop or a GPS.

Violators face fines of up to 100 dollars.

Vestavia Hills now joins Jacksonville and Roanoke as the only Alabama cities to have such bans.
City leaders in Birmingham, Irondale, and Trussville tell FOX6 News they are also considering texting bans.

In Montgomery, one councilman wants fines and even jail time for people who text while driving.
