WALKER COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - It was in a wooded area, close to Corridor X in Cordova, that Walker County officials found what they believe to be the remains of 22-year old Stephanie Newman.
The young mother went missing around Christmas 2009. Her car was found abandoned in the parking lot of the Jasper Walmart. Surveillance video would later show her leaving with someone. That someone, police say, is a person of interest in the case.
"The one thing he denied anything happened," says Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey. "That he dropped her off at a location and she was fine. And we believed for some time that was not the case."
Tirey says investigators continued conversations with the man for months until Tuesday when he told them where Newman was located. Detectives found her decayed remains spread out over a span of 200 yards right alongside the Cordova-Parrish Highway.
Tirey broke the news of the discovery to Newman's family. "And I also feel like deep down they have some relief due to the fact this will bring some closure for them."
