CORDOVA, AL (WBRC) - It was in a wooded area near Corridor X in Cordova where Walker County officials found what they believe to be the remains of 22-year-old Stephanie Newman.
Sheriff John Mark Tirey tells FOX6 the suspect is 30-year old Michael Wayne Humphries of Jasper. He's in the Walker County Jail with a $500,000 bond.
The young mother went missing around Christmas 2009. Her car was found abandoned in the parking lot of Jasper's Walmart. Surveillance video would later show her leaving with someone.
"The one thing, he denied anything happened," says Sheriff Tirey. "That he dropped her off at a location and she was fine. And we believed for some time that was not the case."
Tirey says investigators continued conversations with the suspect for months until Tuesday when he told them where Newman was located. Detectives found her decayed remains spread out over a span of 200 yards right alongside the Cordova-Parrish Highway.
Tirey broke the news of the discovery to Newman's family. "And I also feel like deep down they have some relief due to the fact this will bring some closure for them."
