The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, May 4, 2010:
McWane Science Center is a jewel in Birmingham's crown…in Alabama's crown. McWane is passionate about engaging and teaching children of all ages. When you walk thru the doors at McWane Science Center, no matter what your age, there is so much to do and see. You just don't know where to go or what to see first, because there are four floors of intriguing interactive exhibits covering all aspects of science.
This week, hundreds of elementary and middle school students and their teachers from across the state will converge on McWane Science Center to Celebrate Science. That's what it's called…Celebrate Science. Twenty schools from Anniston to Demopolis and from Cullman to Hoover have created science exhibit designs and the students will attend an Awards Ceremony at McWane on Thursday to find out which projects have won. How wonderful is that…so many young Alabama students excited about science.
Science can be daunting for many of us. But when you engage children, early on, thru exploration and play, science becomes fun. Science and math scores in our state are low. We have this amazing resource in our back yard that can help change that. We must protect and support it.
Have you visited the McWane Science Center, yet? If you haven't, you should. You and your family will love it!
