BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested a man for stealing large amounts of fuel from his oil company employer.

According to detectives, 39-year-old Michael Burpo confessed to stealing around 400 gallons of fuel a week.

His former employer estimates that Burpo took approximately $46,800 worth of gas in a one-year period.

Burpo has not disclosed the buyer of the fuel and says that he "mostly received cash" from the unidentified buyer(s).

To pull off his scheme, Sheriff's investigators say Burpo would fail to pump all of the gas out of his assigned truck from his previous day's deliveries. Instead, he would make stops to meet his buyer and sell the fuel before going to the terminal to receive his assigned amount of fuel for the day.

Burpo was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Saturday and was released after posting  $50,000 bond.
