Internet crime tops FBI’s complaint list

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBRC) – The FBI has released a report that says email scams misusing the bureau's name has quickly become the top type of complaint received through the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. The scams took up 16.6% of all complaints received by the complaint center in 2009.

After fake FBI emails, the top scams were reported to be non-delivered merchandise and non-payments, advance fee fraud, identity theft and Overpayment fraud.

Under half of all the complaints were referred for further action on the local, state and federal levels. These complaints usually involved fraud and financial losses. Total losses in the cases totaled $559.7 million.

The remaining cases not sent to law enforcement were usually not involved in a financial loss. These cases involved received emails where targeted victims did not fall for the scheme or suspects and/or victims were outside of the U.S.
