OXFORD, AL (WBRC) - Big changes have been made in the speed limit to the busiest stretch of highway in Alabama.
The speed limit on Interstate 20 from Oxford to the Georgia State Line has been dropped from 70 to 55 miles per hour.
The change, announced by the Alabama Department of Transportation, takes place after the death of a traveler on I-20 west of the Georgia border.
Tony Harris, with the Alabama DOT, says that the stretch of highway is indeed the busiest in the state and receives the highest volume of truck traffic.
Harris adds that temporary signs and messages boards are already broadcasting the new speed limit. Permanent signs will be placed along the highway as soon as they are available.
