FBI celebrates 60 years of “10 Most Wanted”

WASHINGTON D.C. , AL (WBRC) – The FBI has announced to 60 year commemoration of its "10 Most Wanted Fugitives" program.

In 1949, a reporter approached the FBI to write a story about the toughest guys being sought by the FBI at the time.  The resulting feature became a major story and gained national attention. On March 14, 1950, J. Edgar Hoover began the program as a result of that story.

Since 1950, 494 fugitives have appeared on the list; 463 have been apprehended or located, with 152 of those fugitives located as a direct result of citizen cooperation.
