BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Heavy rains this week may cause Alabama Power to open flood gates on Martin Dam.

The National Weather Service, in a statement Friday morning, said Alabama Power Company advised them that gate operations may become necessary at Martin Dam due to the heavy rainfall that has occurred over the Tallapoosa River basin the past few days.

No details about when the gate operations may occur were announced.

Several inches of rain have fallen across central Alabama since Wednesday morning.  Some locations in Shelby County have received more than five inches of rain, causing flash flooding in low-lying areas and flooding along several streams and rivers in central Alabama.
