Shelby County warns of flooding dangers

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - People living and working in Shelby County today and tonight should beware of flooding dangers, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office, in a release sent by email this afternoon, says it has received reports of large amounts of water on roads, and that ponds and creeks are overflowing their banks. The sheriff's office also says a house fire in North Shelby County could be linked to a lightning strike.

As of 3:06 p.m. today, the following roads were closed:

  • Shelby County (SC) Highway 77 (Columbiana/Wilsonville)
  • SC 47 between SC 46 and Alabama 145 (Shelby)
  • SC 42 between Shelby Iron Works Park and Egg & Butter Road/SC 37 (Shelby)
  • SC 39 at Highland Ridge Lane (Chelsea)
  • 200 Blook of Liberty Road (Chelsea)
  • Cahaba Valley Road at Jasmine Hill Road (Indian Springs)
  • SC 87 at Crim Road (Calera)
  • Crenshaw Swamp Road (Chelsea)
  • SC 56 (Columbiana/Four Mile)

It has been raining for more than 18 hours in Shelby County. FOX6 Chief Meterologist J-P Dice says the area may see rain for another 12 hours.
