BESSEMER, AL - A 123-year-old church in Bessemer held its last service Sunday.
The pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Bessemer says a dwindling congregation is mostly to blame for the church's closing. "This church has never been a commuter church. It's been a community church and after about three to four generations there's really no place for young couples to build," Pastor Gordon McKinney said.
To say good-bye, the church held a 123 year celebration for their final service. More than 100 Current and former members attended, including some from out of town.
The church will donate some of its final offering to Fair Haven Nursing Home. They also donated some of their church funds to a scholarship program at Birmingham Southern for music students.
