ASFA student selected for nationwide for DC internship

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Alabama School of Fine Arts' Math/Science student Haley Hurowitz has been awarded a summer research internship with the US Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.

ASFA, in a statement to FOX6 News, said Hurowitz is one of nine students nationwide to win the internship, which is part of the Science and Engineering Apprentice Program at the Navy.

The ASFA said the research internship is extremely competitive where participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research in the lab. The USNO provides astronomical and timing data required by the Navy and other components of the Department of Defense for navigation, precise positioning, and command, control, and communications.

The ASFA said Haley's research will focus on binary star systems.

Haley is the daughter of Hope Mehlman and Dr. Eli Hurowitz of Mountain Brook.
