HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - Hoover Police Department arrested a woman for violating the Alabama underage drinking law. They found more than 20 minors with alcohol at her home.
Wanda Toolabi, 47, was arrested Monday after a Feb. 19 party at her home.
Officers said they hope this sends a message to other parents. Hoover police arrived at the house after receiving noise complaints from neighbors. They then found 44 minors in the basement with beer and hard liquor.
Hoover Police said the minors were students from Spain Park, Hoover, Oak Mountain, Briarwood Christian, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook high schools.
Hoover Police's Captain Jim Coker said he wants parents to know this is illegal and won't be tolerated.
"First of all it is a violation of state law to host a party where those who are underage are present and drinking," said Capt. Coker,"Secondly you may be civilly liable for anything that could happen."
Hoover Police also responded to another house party on Deerfield Road involving minors on Feb. 27. No adults were present.
The Hoover Coalition works to educate parents and students about the dangers of underage drinking. This week, they launched a new commercial targeting parents, and they hope it hits home.
"Just be a responsible parent, be a responsible adult, if you are having a party at your home supervise it carefully, make sure kids are not bringing alcohol into your home," said Carissa Anthony.
Violating the Alabama open house party law is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $3,000 and/or up to six months in jail.
