Birmingham IRS Help Center to open Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – On Saturday February 20th, Birmingham taxpayers will have access to special help for filing their taxes.

The IRS office at 801 Tom Martin Dr. will open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide assistance to taxpayers dealing with difficult economic times.

"IRS is trying to help people cope with tax issues they may never have faced before," said IRS spokesman Dan Boone. "We hope the Saturday service will benefit those who need help but can't come in during the normal weekday hours."

The center will help filers with tax breaks and will offer free tax preparation and electronic filing for those whose 2009 income was $49,000 or less. Individuals will also be able to get assistance with issues such as IRS garnishments, bills, notices or collection letters. Installment agreements can usually be set up for those who owe tax but are not able to pay the full amount when they file.

Assistance in Spanish will be available by telephone in all IRS centers.

People seeking tax return preparation help at any location should bring: photo identification (for each spouse, if applicable); Social Security cards for each person listed on the tax return; all wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2); interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099); copy of last year's tax return; bank information for direct debit or deposit (optional); and any other pertinent income and expense documents for tax year 2009.
