HOOVER, AL (WBRC) – Two employees of the Ross Bridge Renaissance Hotel have been arrested on embezzlement charges.

Ross Bridge Renaissance Hotel management first alerted Hoover police to the crimes on February 2nd. They say that the employees had embezzled $68,000 through a scheme using false payroll checks from April of 2009 to January of 2010.

After an investigation by the Hoover PD Financial Crimes Unit, Ross Bridge management and loss prevention personnel, warrants were obtained for the arrest of 45-year-old Assistant General Manager Javier Antonio Callejas and 48-year-old Housekeeping Manager Jose Ortiz.

The scam involved Ortiz creating and submitting false pay documents for employees who no longer worked there, which generated bogus payroll checks. Callejas approved the bogus pay invoices and Ortiz cashed the checks. The stolen funds were split between Ortiz and Callejas.

Both face charges of Theft of Property 1st Degree/embezzlement and were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on February 17th.  They have since been released on bond.
