Gubernatorial candidates make loans to campaigns

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Alabama candidates for governor have loaned their campaigns more than five million dollars.

Campaign finance reports show Tim James made the biggest loan with $2 million. Kay Ivey is second at nearly $1.8 million. She is followed by Robert Bentley with $787,000. Four other candidates for governor, including Ron Sparks, loaned themselves smaller amounts.

A political scientist says the loans help candidates show they are committed to their campaigns and help them stand out in a crowded field.
