BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – A Birmingham native has won the Mercedes Marathon in a dazzling come-from-behind finish.
Daniel Ellis was able to cross the finish line with a 2.26.00 time after passing the previous leader, Julius Kosgei, within two miles of the finish. Kosgei had held the lead for quite a while after he passed James Cheruiyot, who had been the leader for the majority of the marathon.
Ellis is originally from Oklahoma, but now works for the Trak Shak in Birmingham.
"It was a perfect day to run. Can't ask for more than that," said Ellis. "The Course is in great shape. It's a fairly flat course. We had a great day to run today."
Kosgei finished second, 1:28 behind Ellis.
