Meth lab explosion injures one

GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) - One person was hurt after a meth lab exploded early Wednesday morning in Etowah County.

The Etowah County Sheriff's Department, in a statement to FOX6 News, said the explosion happened inside a barn on Beard Road in the Ballplay community. Sheriff Todd Entrekin said a 911 call was made at approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday saying the barn was on fire. Firefighters and deputies responded to the scene where they discovered the fire and the meth lab.

Sheriff Entrekin said James Paul Battles, 45, and Tammy Ashburn, 41, were inside the barn at the time of the explosion. Battles was flown to a Birmingham hospital for treatment. Ashburn was taken to the Etowah County Detention Center.

Sheriff Entrekin said he expected to file charges against both individuals.
