Birmingham police chief looking to open downtown precinct

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Police Chief A.C. Roper wants to increase police protection in downtown Birmingham.

The police substation on Fourth Avenue North serves the downtown area. It has a small staff and specific hours of operation.

Roper wants to open a downtown precinct to focus on that area. He says it would operate around the clock with a command staff and more personnel. It is still in the early planning stages.

Roper has not said when the precinct would open or where it would be located.
