The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.
Silence is golden…as I was growing up, it's a refrain I heard from parents and teachers trying to quiet noisy children. Not TOO long ago there were many more opportunities to be surrounded by silence…to be able to "hear yourself think." Today, with cell phones to our ears, music and entertainment bombarding us from all directions, busy family and work schedules, we are rarely in a silent place.
I love everything about local morning television and radio shows. When I wake up on goes the tv and then the radio on my way to work. For some reason my radio was not on the other morning. As my hand moved to the dial to turn on the radio, I thought, just this once…spend some time in the quiet. I did…it was just me with my thoughts. It was time well spent…productive. By the way, I did get my daily dose of radio again this morning.
Silence IS golden. We all need some every once in a while… even if it's in the bathtub or just before we go to sleep at night… to collect our thoughts, to be by and with ourselves. When was the last time you had some silence in you life?
