PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - Fundraising efforts aimed at helping the family of a slain Pelham police officer are exceeding their goals.
Today was the final day of a 10-day campaign for local restaurants to donate a portion of their proceeds to the Officer Philip Davis fund.
At Johnny Ray's BBQ restaurant in Pelham, 10% of all of sales went to the Officer Philip Davis Fund that was set up to pay off the mortgage of the Pelham police officer killed in the line of duty.
"That's the least I can do," said Johnny Ray's owner Doug Patton. "He is protecting me and my business and family everyday as a member of the Pelham community, and it's like someone you know was killed in the line of duty. And inside, you just wanna do something. That's what we did."
Johnny Ray's was the last of 10 restaurants in 10 days hoping to raise $10,000 towards the Davis fund's target.
"Our goal was $10,000, and 1 night alone we raised $12,000 so just that one night," Patton said. "So we've already reached our goal, but we're gonna get there."
Pelham's mayor said the fund already had $65,000 collected before this campaign was complete.
The goal is $200,000, and Sunday every rib, fry, and soft drink helped.
"They're going out everyday and risking their lives everyday for people they don't know," Patton said. "And then for it to happen in our own community, it just touches your heart, and we need to do something."
