CHELSEA, AL (WBRC) - The shaky economy isn't stopping Chelsea from moving forward. It recently broke ground on another shopping center.
Highway 280 near County Road 39 is the future site of the Chelsea Crossroads Shopping Center.
Publix is expected to be the anchor store with another 30,000 square feet of retail space and five lots for other businesses like restaurants, banks and other stores.
Last year, Chelsea experienced a five percent decrease in sales taxes.
Mayor Earl Niven says some folks leave the city to shop.
He says more choices will keep folks spending their money in the city.
"I think it will be great for this area we have to go 20 miles to get to a Publix," said Mickey Miller.
"I think having a Publix come in will just bring in restaurants. We don't have a lot sit down restaurants here, said Susan Shultz. "I think it'll bring in more residents."
Tree Top Adventure is also under construction at County Road 41 and Highway 280. It's an indoor laser tag and game room. And there are talks about an Applebee's Restaurant coming.
The other businesses coming to the shopping center are unknown.
