PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - Pelham Police are warning residents to keep a close watch on their vehicles after a sudden increase in car burglaries.
The crimes have happened throughout the city, including in shopping centers and residential areas.
Lt. Scott Tucker at the Pelham Police Department said in many cases, the crimes could be prevented if people would just lock their doors.
"You get complacent. You go from home to work, to the store, to the same locations and nothing ever happens. You don't expect it to happen, and boom, now you are a victim," said Lt. Tucker.
Pelham police officers are asking residents to be cautious. Don't leave valuables in your car, park in well-lit areas, be aware of your surroundings, and of course, always lock up.
"If they would secure their vehicles, which includes in their driveway," said Lt. Tucker, "When you pull in your garage, sometimes if you leave the garage door unlocked, someone can come in and get your purse or your wallet."
Lt. Tucker said because the cases have been so widespread it is hard for police to crack down on the crimes.
They are asking residents to help them out and give them a call if they see anything suspicious.
