Birmingham School Board to make offer to superintendent candidate

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Birmingham school board is making its official offer to the candidate they want as their next superintendent. The deal includes a base salary of $185,000 and other incentives.

The leading candidate is Doctor Craig Witherspoon, who is currently the superintendent in Edgecombe County Schools in North Carolina.

While some board members said the deal is in line with what superintendents in comparable size districts make, others were worried it was too much.

"I think that we have to be extremely cautious and realize the amount of money that goes to the superintendent and not base salary, but incentives. That doesn't necessarily get you the best superintendent," says school board member Virginia Volker.

The school board's attorney will present the offer to Doctor Witherspoon, and the negotiations will go from there.
