Jefferson County Commission spends $120,000 on lobbyist

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) The Jefferson County commission narrowly voted to hire a contract lobbyist Tuesday for $120,000.

The commission hired John Guthrie, Jr., who is from Cullman and the brother-in-law of Lt. Governor Jim Folsom, Jr.  Guthrie will be paid $10,000 a month and up to $120,000 a year to lobby Alabama lawmakers in Montgomery.

Commissioners Bettye Fine Collins, Shelia Smoot, and William Bell voted for the contract.  All three say the county needs a lobbyist to protect the interests of Jefferson County taxpayers.

Commissioners Bobby Humphryes and Jim Carns voted against the contract.  Both commissioners say now is not the time to spend that kind of money, considering the county's current financial situation.
