BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Longtime WBRC-TV anchor Bill Bolen is retiring after decades of serving the Birmingham TV market.

He will announce his retirement Monday during the 6:00 a.m. hour of the Good Day Alabama morning news on FOX6.

Bolen, 81, began his broadcasting career in radio in 1947. He transitioned into TV in 1965 before joining WBRC in August of 1969. Over the past 40 years, Bolen has served as a reporter and anchor for the TV station.

In 2001, Bolen "semi-retired," cutting his hours back and hosting only a few news and feature segments for Good Day Alabama. Now he plans to retire fully, with his last day on the air set for Jan. 28.

In addition to his work at WBRC, Bolen has served on a number of community boards. In 1997, Bolen, a cancer survivor, received the American Cancer Society's Life Inspiration Award.
