Radio stations and wireless providers join the rally for Haiti

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Around the United States, folks are watching the events unfold on TV and people are touched by the devastation in Haiti and want to help the earthquake victims.

People and businesses are responding in a big way.

Local radio staion, 98.7 KISS FM is holding a "Pennies for Haiti" campaign though Friday in different locations in the city.

People donated pennies and other change.

Others went even further giving cash and writing $40, $50 and $100 checks all going to the American Red Cross.

Other stations, 95.7 JAMZ and 610 WAGG are also collecting donations.

"To know that that many people hurt touched my heart," said Winthrop Knall who donated money.

"We just got out on the fore front of this," said Chris Coleman, 98.7 KISS FM radio personality. "They can't get any supplies. I know Dominican Republic is right next door, just sent money that way they can start rebuilding lives over."

Verizon Wireless started a relief effort as well.

Customers can text the word "Haiti" to 90999 and a $10 donation will go directly to the Red Cross to help victims.
