BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The long cold snap is taking its toll on pipes in people's homes and the supply lines under the streets. Now that the weather is warming up, the frozen lines are thawing and beginning to crack.
On Sunday morning, the Birmingham Board of Education was dealing with minor flooding due to a pipe that burst. It is just one of a large number of calls that the Birmingham Water Works has responded to in the recent freezing cold weather we have seen. The large volume means crews are working long hours out in the elements.
Here are some tips to keep the damage to a minimum:
-Wrap up the pipes and let faucets drip.
-Drain pipes if you know the home will be vacant for a while.
-On the outside, caulk the area where the pipe enters the home to keep it insulated.
-Keep your hoses drained and your water meter box closed.
