Riley to announce charter school option

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Governor Bob Riley is announcing his plans to give local school boards the option to use charter schools to help reform struggling schools.

Governor Riley and state school officials believe passing a charter schools law in the state will help allow Alabama to compete for $200-million in federal education funds.

Charter schools are public schools that allow educators to use innovative methods to improve student achievement.

Alabama is one of only 11 states that do not allow charter schools.
