ATLANTA (AP) - A federal appeals court has reinstated the guilty verdict for a former Jefferson County Commissioner who was convicted of conspiracy and bribery charges.
The three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta on Monday reversed a lower judge's ruling that would have granted Gary White a new trial. The ruling instead orders the case to proceed to sentencing.
A jury in Montgomery in 2008 convicted White of 1 count of conspiracy and eight counts of bribery.
Prosecutors say White accepted envelopes full of cash - often $2,000 at a time - from a Birmingham engineer, Sohan Singh.
They say the cash was as a reward for White's help in getting Singh's company, U.S. Infrastructure, county contracts while White was on the commission.
