BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A small airplane was blown off the runway at the Birmingham airport Tuesday night.
Firefighters tell FOX6 News the small airplane was blown off the runway shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday as it was trying to land. The pilot was not hurt.
Authorities said the plane was en route from Atlanta to the airport in Shelby County when air traffic controllers diverted the pilot to land in Bessemer due to bad weather. The pilot, as he approached Bessemer, was diverted to Birmingham due to more bad weather. By the time the pilot landed in Birmingham, authorities said he had run out of fuel and the strong winds blew his airplane off the runway.
Very gusty winds were present at the time of the incident as a strong storm system moved through the area.
Birmingham Police and Fire officials were on the scene investigating.
