The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, December 8, 2009.
This holiday season, as you sit down with your catalogs or computer, ready to buy gifts for your family and friends, please pause and consider patronizing your local merchant. With an unemployment rate of more than 10%, buying locally has never been more important.
In the last year, we have seen so many store fronts go dark. But, in the last few months, we have begun to see the lights turned on again, in many locations, as new shop keepers have filled their shelves in preparation for holiday buying. These few weeks of retail sales at the end of the year determine whether or not many local businesses retain staff and stay in business.
Whether it's in Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Cullman or Birmingham, if our communities are to prosper, local business has to be supported. Please spend some of your money locally!
