Holiday season brings food, fun, and unwanted stress

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - 'Tis the season for holiday parties, time with family and friends, and stress.

During the holiday season, balancing the demands of shopping, family obligations, and guests can take a toll on you if you aren't careful.

Birmingham physician, Dr. Steven Hefter, said if you stay positive and flexible, you will be able to stay healthy mentally and physically, and you and your family will enjoy the season more.

Also, take care of yourself.

"Even 15 to 20 minutes a day, if you can do something for yourself it makes all the difference in the world," said Dr. Hefter, "It lets you organize and if you feel better, then everyone around you benefits."

Dr. Hefter also said make sure you are getting enough sleep, try to only eat sweets in moderation, and exercise.

Keep an eye on family and friends to make sure they are feeling okay.  It is also important to keep everything in perspective, and know it's okay if every moment isn't perfect.

"The best memories are when things go wrong and we can laugh at them. It really isn't in the end of the world if the Jello mold doesn't turn out right or the cookies fall on the floor. We will all survive," said Dr. Hefter.
