The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday, December 3, 2009.
It is no accident that the news is dominated by stories about jobs and education. They are undeniably linked. The well-educated, well-trained among us are able to get better jobs. Families with viable income decide where they will live based on the availability of good schools. Business follows, opening their doors in communities where folks have the income to buy their products or have the education and skills to produce the products they sell, resulting in community growth and prosperity. Not rocket science, right?
We want prosperity for our region! We want…we need jobs! What will get us jobs…good jobs? It's as simple and complex as tackling the issues of education in our community.
While, business is attracted to communities that have excellent schools, it goes both ways. Local business, are you investing in our schools…in the future of your business and our region?
If we want to fix our problems in Birmingham, in our region, it begins and ends with fixing education. If we do that, everything else will take care of itself.
