BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Acting Birmingham Mayor Roderick Royal was sworn in Wednesday in a behind closed doors, unpublicized ceremony. No city leaders, including Royal himself would answer why the ceremony took place a week after he was named acting mayor.
Municipal Court Judge Raymond Chambliss was seen leaving the ceremony at City Hall. Chambliss says he was asked by the city's legal department to conduct the ceremony.
Tuesday, the city council's legal counsel, Judge J. Richmond Pearson indicated he believed a ceremony should have been held at the beginning. That could be the reason for the swearing-in, but Royal would not speak with reporters.
