Patrick Cooper announces campaign for Birmingham mayor

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The runner-up in 2007's race for the position of mayor of Birmingham has officially thrown his hat into the ring.

Attorney Patrick Cooper may have lost the race to Larry Langford in 2007, but he plans to make up for it in the special election of 2009. In a news conference on Thursday morning, Cooper made the announcement of his new campaign. He says his campaign will focus on bringing more jobs to the community.

After coming close to forcing a run-off between himself and Langford in 2007, Cooper filed a lawsuit that Langford did not live inside Birmingham's city limits. The lawsuit contended that Langford was still residing in his Fairfield home. The judge in the case sided with Langford.

Another candidate, Edith Mayomi made her announcement to run yesterday.

The winner of the special election will serve the two years remaining in former Mayor Larry Langford's term.
