Meeting held to discuss Bryce Mental Hospital's future

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - The public is welcome to a meeting today in Northport about the future of Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa.

On Tuesday, concerned employees got the chance to voice their concerns.  State Mental Health Commissioner John Houston answered employees' questions. He says no deal has been finalized on closing the hospital or moving patients to another facility such as Carraway Hospital in Birmingham.

"I know that it's unsettling for people just to hear what's possible," says Houston. "But it ought to be comforting to some extent that things have not been settled. There's still an opportunity for folks to be heard."

Bryce has been in negotiations to sell the property to the University of Alabama, but the two sides have not agreed on a price.

The public meeting will be held today at the Northport Civic Center at 5:30 a.m.
