The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
In a month or so the citizens of Birmingham will elect a new mayor and with that election will send a message, good or bad, like it or not, to the rest of the world about what we value.
Recently, I talked with a voter, who said he had voted for Mr. Langford because he had a vision for the City... he had ideas. This citizen said the city had been languishing...going nowhere and Mr. Langford's energy and enthusiasm was refreshing and was needed to move Birmingham forward.
In the last year, all ideas and plans for growth for the city have been greatly overshadowed by the unfortunate negative publicity around our Mayor's problems.
I think all of us want to see Birmingham flourish. We want our city to have some of the new jobs that are being generated in other parts of the state. Electing a strong, effective new mayor will not get the job done, in and of itself...but it would be a great beginning. It would send the right message to all who will be watching.
