ATMORE, AL (WBRC) - David Larry Nelson died Monday night in state prison, serving more than 27 years on death row for the shooting death of a Kimberly woman.

Brian Corbett, public information manager for the Alabama Department of Corrections, notified FOX6 News Tuesday morning of Nelson's death.  Corbett said Nelson, 64, was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m. Monday in the infirmary of Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

Corbett said Nelson was sentenced to die for the January 1, 1978, shooting death of Wilson Thompson in Kimberly, a suburb of Birmingham.  Nelson was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the fatal shooting of Birmingham cab driver James Cash the night before.

Corbett said Nelson served more than 27 years on Alabama's death row, twice avoiding execution dates in 1996 and 2003.
