Smitherman: 2010 budget passed with $20 million shortfall

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Acting Mayor Carole Smitherman says the 2010 fiscal year budget was passed with a $20 million shortfall for essential services. Smitherman says the finance department knew about the shortfall when the budget was passed.

Finance Director Steve Sayler resigned Monday.

Smitherman is in the process of forming a task force to analyze the city's current financial state and the budgetary process.

Smitherman says the city is financially sound with $160 million in reserve, however she said the budget process was "a mess." She vowed to clean it up and examine the city's books 'in a way they've never been examined before'.
