Judge refuses to stop electronic bingo shutdown

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A judge refused Tuesday to set aside his court ruling on electronic bingo in Walker County while the bingo hall operators appeal his ruling.

Judge Robert Vance issued a statement Tuesday morning where he refused to stay his earlier ruling.  Attorneys representing the bingo halls asked the judge Monday to set aside his ruling and let them continue to operate the electronic bingo machines while they appeal his ruling.

In his statement Tuesday, Judge Vance said, "continued operation of electronic bingo in Walker County would constitute illegal gambling. Even if such operations have led to many good things, this Court cannot condone and permit continued criminal activity for any period of time."

Last week, Judge Vance ordered bingo halls in Walker County to stop operating electronic bingo machines by the end of business on Thursday. Paper bingo is still permitted.
