Judge to consider bingo appeal request

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The judge who declared electronic bingo operations in Walker County illegal said Monday he would decide soon whether or not to allow the bingo halls to continue their operations while they appeal his ruling.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge Robert Vance said Monday he will decide within the next day or so if he will stay his order declaring electronic bingo operations in Walker County illegal while attorneys representing the bingo halls appeal his order.

Judge Vance did tell attorneys he was "uncomfortable" allowing something to continue with which he believes is illegal.

Bingo hall operators, employees and customers gathered Monday morning to protest Judge Vance's ruling last week, which said electronic bingo does not meet the legal requirements to be treated like paper bingo.

The paper version of the game is the only action you could find at bingo halls in Walker County over the weekend. The crowds in those halls were much lower than before the ruling and that prompted people on Monday to urge commissioners to pass a resolution calling for a vote to clarify the law. Commissioners did not do it.
