The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, October 27, 2009.
Nothing frustrates me more than seeing yet another report, showing U S students lagging behind in math or science scores...while students in some developing countries, who don't begin to have our resources, are excelling.
Some say its lack of parental involvement. I think, it's because we don't REALLY value the position of "teacher" .
Physicians...lawyers... even professional athletes, all make six...seven figure salaries. Why not teachers? Today, most teachers need a Masters Degree to compete for jobs and are required to complete continuing education classes throughout their career.
How many bright, gifted young people would choose teaching as a career if they knew their salary would reflect their talent and commitment.
Is there anything more important...of higher value... than investing in the development of our children's minds...preparing them for a highly competitive world? I think not.
