Electronic bingo ruled illegal in Walker County

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Electronic bingo in Walker County has been ruled illegal by a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge.

On Monday morning, Judge Robert Vance declared made the ruling that electronic bingo machines do not fit the definition of traditional bingo and constitutes an illegal lottery. He added that all bingo operations that use electronic stations are illegal.

Walker County Sheriff Mark Tirey says he will deliver Judge Vance's order to every bingo operation in the county. This should be around 15 different bingo halls. Tirey says he will give the operations a few days to pull the machines.

Walker County District Attorney Charlie Baker says he welcomed the ruling, but the attorney for three of the bingo halls, Jim Stevens, says this case may be appealed. Stevens says he will tell his clients to go ahead and shut down.

Bill Adair, the attorney for Sheriff Tirey, says "this ruling should mean the end of electronic bingo in Alabama, including Macon County and Greene County."
