Flu vaccine shortage reported in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Health officials are reporting a shortage in the flu vaccine.

According to the State Department of Public Health, some manufacturers produced less of the seasonal vaccine not anticipating the early rush and the high demand for it.

The American Family Care on Highway 280 ran out of the seasonal flu vaccine and locations around the state no longer have it.

One physician shared with us another reason why the supply is limited. "The government asked corporations manufacturing it to focus attention on H1N1 vaccine. As a result of that, there wasn't as many producers and we had less product to offer for public," said Dr. Amy Illescas with American Family Care.

If you are in search of the vaccine, check with your county health department. They may have some doses and some physicians may also still have a limited supply.

Another shipment of the vaccine is expected in Alabama at the end of this month or the beginning of November.
