Collins: More layoffs expected in future

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Despite bringing hundreds of workers back on the job, Jefferson County may not yet be in the clear.

County Commission President Bettye Fine Collins says, in her opinion, layoffs will eventually happen. Collins says that commissioners and department heads need to be working on a leaner government which could mean fewer employees. She says, with the financial struggles occurring across the country, cutting the workforce will eventually become a reality. "I think eventually that's going to happen. We can't just say 'great we have them back to work.' We have to continue to look at a smaller government," said Collins.

More than 700 county employees were put on unpaid administrative leave this summer, when the county announced it did not have enough money to make payroll.
