Birmingham home sales decline

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Fewer homes were sold in the Birmingham area in September 2009 than compared with September 2008, with foreclosures representing more than a fourth of those sales.

The Birmingham Association of Realtors, in a statement to FOX6 News, said 956 homes were sold in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Blount counties in September 2009, which was down 18 percent from the 1,172 homes sold in September 2008.

The BAR said foreclosures represented 28 percent of all homes sold last month, which was down from 45 percent in January.

The association said the number of homes for sale last month was down 10 percent from a year ago and the average price for a home was six percent lower.
