New council members prepare for terms

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham runoffs ended with three new faces elected to the Birmingham City Council Wednesday night.  Kim Rafferty defeated two-term incumbent Carol Duncan to become councilor of district 2.   Jay Roberson won his bid to lead district 7.  LaShunda Scales won her seat for district one back during the general election in August.  All three new members say their first order of business will be to meet with the neighborhood association presidents to see what issues they feel needs to be addressed.  "We need to sit down and talk with the presidents first.  That's where the agenda needs to be set," Roberson says.

Rafferty says she ran because she felt there was misrepresentation in her district.  She says her first order of business is improving the quality of life for those in her district.  Scales says she will focus on economic development and public safety.  All three councilors say they're excited to take office.  However, an official swearing in ceremony has not been set yet.
